Neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin)


 

What are Neuromodulators or Botulinum Toxin?

Botulinum toxins are naturally occurring substances that can be used for both cosmetic and functional purposes. They work by modulating nerves, specifically nerves that control muscle function. By modulating nerves, muscle contraction can be weakened to varying amounts. For cosmetic purposes, botulinum toxin is used in areas to reduce wrinkling. Wrinkles result from repetitive muscle contraction. By weakening muscle contractions and strength, the prominence of these wrinkles can be reduced. In addition, specific facial muscles can be targeted to improve facial appearance, such as a slightly higher eyebrow position.

Neuromodulator Treatment Options :

Neuromodulators all have varying types of botulinum toxin. Common neuromodulator  options include Botox, Xeomin, Dysport and Jeaveau.

Importantly, neuromodulators are different from dermal fillers.  The most common fillers are made of hyaluronic acid and work by providing structural volume and support in areas that may benefit from augmentation. Unlike botulinum toxins, fillers do not work by modulating nerves or weakening muscles.

What to Expect With Treatment :

Botulinum toxin injections are given in the office setting. The treatment itself takes less than five minutes to administer. The treatments are given approximately every 3 months, although treatment intervals may vary by patient. Occasionally, bruising or redness may occur after your botulinum injection, though this is self-limited. The treatment starts to work at about 3 days after your treatment, with maximal effect at about 1 week after treatment.  Treatment strengths and patterns are typically adjusted at future treatments to meet your needs.
